5 Things You Must Know About Facebook & Instagram Advertising in 2020
Episode 235 of Perpetual Traffic

In this episode of Perpetual Traffic, Ralph Burns of Tier 11 presents 5 important things to know about the future of Facebook and Instagram advertising. With each point, he provides impressive facts to prove how small changes to advertising strategies can greatly expand your market and help you stay relevant.

I've summarized his 5 takeaways in the following points:

1. Ads need to be relevant and useful. This year, as more businesses are moving towards advertising on social media platforms, you have to stand out. Your ads should have something of value, like a free download or discount. It's especially important to stand out from competition because of consumer interaction with ads. With the "why am I seeing this ad" button, advertisers must make sure their ads are attractive and relatable.

2. Ads must have variation. Burns states that within ad groupings, you should have 4-6 different ads. Image ads, video ads, carousel ads-- this will make your ads more relevant and help you reach more potential customers.

3. This year is an election year! 9.8 billion dollars will be spent on political ads for Facebook. And political ads on Facebook, WhatsApp (owned by Facebook), and Instagram will increase because Spotify, TikTok, Google, and Twitter have refused to allow/run political ads. This means that digital marketers must be even more strategic in how they use social media. Their ads must be extra thoughtful this year because audiences will be bombarded by political ads.
Facebook stock is still growing; it's a relevant channel.

4. Test landing pages! Because you're probably using Facebook and Instagram to send people to your website, Burns insists that smart digital marketers will invest in split testing. This assures that you're sending audiences to the most attractive website/landing page possible. Burns recommends using Visual Website Optimizer or Click Funnels to test links.

5. Know the power of Instagram. Its algorithms are improving every year to find ideal customers and leads, and its eCommerce options are expanding this year. Instagram shopping will become a very valuable tool, and not just for younger audiences. 37% of American adults use Instagram. And this number is increasing! With the upcoming presidential campaign, people will be accessing Instagram more to ignore political ads and political statement posts. Instagram stories are particularly valuable: 62% of Instagram users have become interested in a brand or product after seeing it in their Instagram stories, and 500 million people each day interact with Instagram stories.

  1. Still blows my mind how much money is spent on political ads! Love the point on testing...you should continually be A/B testing in digital marketing. This allows you to see what's more effective and continue to get better at messaging.
